Clay Roots, Future Makers!

Ceramics is one of the oldest art forms on Aruba. Long ago, it was used by the indigenous peoples of the island in daily life and culture. Today, this project connects that rich heritage with new generations and brings this tradition into the present.

We proudly present a large ceramics project on Aruba for young people aged 12 to 28 years.
Participation for this age group is completely free.

In this project, you learn how to work with clay, make tableware, and produce your own ceramic collection. You explore different techniques, materials, glazes, and kilns, while building a personal portfolio step by step.

Most groups take part in:

  • 1 class per week with instructions
  • 1 open workspace session per week with coaching

During the open workspace, you work independently, experiment with learned techniques, and develop your collection further. This helps you understand the material better, improve your skills, and gain confidence. Working in fixed groups creates connection, trust, and a strong group feeling.

Ages 12–16 follow a special version of the project.
The focus is on self-development, creativity, and talent, with one lesson per week and less attention to entrepreneurship. Lessons are every Monday OR Thursdays from 3.30pm – 5.45pm

Starters Onderwijs are young adult who are not attending school, but like to learn more skills on the ceramic field. And maybe turn it into their profession. Lessons are every Tuesday from 11.00am – 1.15pm

Vooropleiding Kunsten (Ages 15 – 20) not only learn about ceramics. But also learn about portfolio building for Art Schools and basic entrepreneurship in Arts. Lessons are every Tuesday from 6.30pm – 8.45pm or Wednesdays from 3.30 – 5.45pm

A maximum of two young adults (under the age of 28 years old) can join one group. Lessons are every Tuesday and Thursdays from 6.30pm – 8.45pm

Applications are open until February 8, 2026.

Throughout the first half year, participants:

  • start with the basics of clay and ceramics
  • learn casting, illustration, and glazing
  • design and produce their own collections
  • learn about art & enterpreneurship
  • build a portfolio to enter art school or to become an enterpreneur
  • present their work in a small exhibition and a final exhibition

At the end of the project, young participants have a strong portfolio, practical ceramic skills, and the creative confidence to continue their education or start their own path in the creative sector.

To raise the level of the lessons, we work with an international design team from Aruba, Curaçao, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden.
Our team has close connections with art education in the Netherlands, which allows us to support young people who want to continue with a creative education there. An overview of our team members will follow soon.

Join us and shape your ideas in clay.

This project is made possible by the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie. Together, we aim to boost Aruba’s ceramic cultural heritage and build a vibrant makers’ community on the island.
